At the installation of officers on February 1, 1997, John Pappert gave the following speech in recognition of Kathy and Joe Unterreiner:

There are many people who have
given much of themselves to this organization over the years.
I am sure, no one will disagree with me when we say this about
Kathy and Joe Unterreiner. I can honestly say that during the
past four years as Joe's Vice-President, we never had any serious
disagreements. No shouting matches, no table pounding. All matters
were settled in a calm and sensible manner.
However, before I say more about Joe, I want to talk about Kathy.
As many of you know, Kathy has an easy-going and calm manner
about her. I believe, like so many of our women are to us, she
is a calming influence on Joe's life. She is also a better driver
and navigator than Joe. In fact, she is a better driver than
either Joe or I.
I recall being in a van with Joe and Kathy at one of the Dachverband
meetings in another city. Kathy was driving and all of us were
unsure of exactly where to go. When we came to an intersection
and decision-making time was at hand, she suggested, a left turn
was in order. Well, after some discussion and looking at some
maps, Joe and I overruled Kathy and told her that the opposite
direction was the right way to go. It didn't take us long to
realize that we were completely in the wrong part of town and
that a 180-degree change in direction was in order. Now, I know
that most women would have loved the opportunity to say: "I
told you so, you dummies". But not Kathy, this would have
been completely out of character for her. She didn't say a word
but I could tell there was nevertheless a faint little smile
on her face.
As I said earlier, it was an honor to have served this organization
with Joe during the past four years. As many of you know, he
has been active in this or-ganization almost from its very beginning
as a participant in the Youth Group, leader of the Youth Group,
member of the Building Committee, Vice-President and finally
President. How can one summarize the qualities of such a dedicated
individual
a committed and compassionate man, a selfless
worker, a good craftsman, a good family man, a good Christian,
and simply a good human being.
Please join me in a standing ovation in recognition of Kathy
and Joe Unterreiner.
