'Umlaute'
on the standard US-keyboard

Hold down the Alt-key while entering a three-digit code on the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard; when the alt-key is released, the Umlaut or special character appears:

Alt + 132 = ä
Alt + 148 = ö
Alt + 129 = ü
Alt + 225 = ß
Alt + 142 = Ä
Alt + 153 = Ö
Alt + 154 = Ü

(The three-digit code referenced above is technically referred to as the ASCII-code.)
